Reiki is a comforting modality for not just humans, but also for cats and dogs and other pets.

Compassionate and forward-thinking humans all over the world are fans of the practice of Reiki, a system of integrative energy healing. Within the last several  decades, the offering also of Animal Reiki and Pet Reiki as an adjunct comforting therapy for our companion animals has skyrocketed. This modality is popular among pet owners, animal rescues, behaviorists, pet spas, and veterinarian practices who offer a progressive approach to healing practices.

According to recent 2025 statistical data, in the US alone, there 94 million households who have loving stewardship of (own) a pet. Some homes have multiple pets and different types of pets. Also, 46% of European households own a pet. There are about 400 million pet cats in Asia and 55 million pet dogs in Brazil. That’s a lot of pets that could benefit from Reiki.

What Exactly is Pet Reiki?

Reiki, a system which originated in Japan, is based on spiritual energy. All things, its advocates believe, are made of energy. The practice of Reiki involves energy traveling with the hands of a practitioner to a subject’s energy pathways and centers, then through the whole body to help balance and restore the body’s energy system. It often has a calming effect which helps to foster well-being in the body. People report that it can leave them with a peaceful and centered feeling. And this is often observable of pets who have received Reiki too.

Those who practice Reiki usually don’t refer to themselves as healers. This is because this integrative practice involves creating an energetic space that fosters enhanced opportunity  for a subject’s self-healing. It’s also possible for people to treat themselves if they learn Reiki through Reiki courses.

Reiki is ideal for pets because it is gentle and non-invasive. The practice never harms an animal. Animal Reiki doesn’t require physical contact. It assists to correct energy imbalances in an animal’s body and can even occur from a distance. A cat or dog session usually lasts 15 to 30 minutes. A people Reiki session by contrast  is often an hour and can be 1.5 hours.

What’s in it for Animals?

Reiki for cats and dogs can offer benefits to both sick and well animals. It may:

  • Help strengthen an animal’s immune system before cancer treatment
  • Help to speed healing after sickness or surgery
  • Promote relaxation and reduce stress to solve behavioral problems
  • Assist to relieve pain
  • Provide comfort for terminally ill pets, as well as owners
  • Enhance a pet’s overall well-being
  • Increase the pet-owner bond

A relaxed peaceful and energetically centered body, human or pet, helps to create a relaxation response which can help the body facilitate healing. Veterinarians intrigued by the possibilities of pet Reiki are adding it as an adjunct therapy that complements surgery and other treatments. Used in conjunction with conventional medicine, it may result in a speedier recovery and can help save owners extra cost and anxiety.
