our story
Rooted in a practice thousands of years old
The Reiki practiced today traces back to Dr. Mikao Usui, who developed the system in Japan in the early 1900s after years of studying medicine, psychology, and theology. His teachings passed to Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, who refined the practice, and then to Hawayo Takata, who carried it to the United States and trained the Reiki masters who would spread it across the West.
IARP was founded in 1996 to give that lineage a professional home — a place where independent practitioners, master teachers, and students could find shared standards, credibility, and community, regardless of which Reiki tradition or lineage they were trained in.

From Mount Kurama to a global association
Early 1900s
Dr. Mikao Usui develops the system of healing that becomes Usui Reiki, and opens a clinic in Japan.
1930s
Hawayo Takata trains under Dr. Hayashi in Tokyo and later brings Reiki to the United States.
1996
IARP is founded to give independent practitioners and teachers a professional home.
