Reiki for Animals and Pets

Pets and Animals LOVE Reiki!

Whether they’re furry, feathered, scaly, or hairless, animals absolutely love Reiki. This safe and natural healing practice can be used to help dogs, cats, horses, and other critters with a wide range of issues and conditions, a perfect complement to traditional veterinary care.

It can also be used as a stand-alone treatment to enhance your pet’s overall peace and well-being. The benefits of Reiki for pets are the same as those for humans, although Reiki sessions for animals are typically done in a slightly different way.

When used for animals, Reiki energy healing can:

  • Promote relaxation, especially in times of stress; think going to the vet, traveling in general, during fireworks or a thunderstorm
  • Help with behavioral problems
  • Support and speed up healing after illness, injury, or surgery
  • Relieve pain and decrease side effects of medical procedures
  • Help support animals that are pregnant, ailing, or with chronic or acute health conditions
  • Provide comfort and physical, mental, and spiritual support for animals and their people at the end of life
  • Deepen the relationship and bond between pets and their humans

Animal Reiki Session: What to Expect

Unlike human Reiki sessions where the recipient lies down and relaxes, Pet Reiki sessions may take on a much freer form. Animals tend to receive the healing energy more like little kids do: they move about, connect from a distance, and tend to prefer a less formal approach. Let the pet come to the practitioner, not the other way around.

The practitioner may likely make house calls, as animals are most comfortable in their home surroundings. And comfort is one of the goals for a Reiki session, for both pets and people.

Distance Reiki for pets is also hugely helpful—and popular. Here your animal can remain in the comfort of your own home while the practitioner sends Reiki healing from a distance. Distance sessions can be particularly beneficial for horses, cows, and other large animals that aren’t easily transported.

While animal Reiki studies are currently rare and only involve laboratory settings, animal anecdotes abound:

Reiki for Dogs

One practitioner was able to help a fearful rescue dog that was shaking uncontrollably, slinking around with his belly to the ground. Once in a private room, the dog crawled onto the practitioner’s lap and stayed put for 20 minutes.

The dog then shook his head, did a big body shake, then looked up at the practitioner and sighed. They stayed together another 30 minutes, after which time the dog got up and walked normally—and calmly—out of the room.

Reiki for Cats

A Reiki Master visits her mom each year, where her mom’s cat just can’t get enough of her—whether she is consciously performing Reiki or not. This is after giving the cat a single Reiki session when the master and cat first met. The cat now runs to greet her, sleeps with her, winds around her ankles while she’s watching TV, and even once crawled into her suitcase when she was packing to go back home.

Reiki for Horses

The Reiki attraction can be just as strong for horses, as evidenced by another practitioner who regularly practiced Reiki on herself in the presence of her horse. The horse would come extremely close and lean into her, frequently falling into a deep sleep.

Reiki for Birds

A terrified pigeon at an animal rescue would constantly bite and even attack her caretaker. A seasoned animal Reiki practitioner paid a visit to and used Reiki healing to fill the space with harmonized energy while creating a sense of safety for the bird.

Before you knew it, the pigeon perched on the caretaker’s shoulder. The caretaker was able to clean the cage and feed the pigeon with absolutely no aggression or drama.
